Lee Gugerty: HCI Research

Information organization and search

Knowledge-Based Internet Search. With collaborators at the Palo Alto Research Center, I am investigating how people use prior knowledge of a domain to help them answer complex questions in this domain using the internet. The knowledge domain we are using is diabetes. See Gugerty, Billman, Pirolli & Elliott, Human Factors & Ergonomics Society Proceedings 2007 (PDF)

Individual Differences in Internet Search. Craig Treadaway, James Rubenstein and I are investigating how individual differences in cognitive abilities, computer experience, and computer attitides affect peoples' ability to search for information on the internet. See Gugerty, L., Treadaway, C. & Rubinstein, J. (2006). Individual differences in internet search outcomes and processes. Proceedings of Computer Human Interaction (CHI) 2006 Conference, New York , NY : Association for Computing Machinery. (paper-PDF)

Animated Work Environment. In collaboration with an architect, a robotics engineer, and a sociologist at Clemson, I am investigating how people organize and search for information during information-intensive tasks such as composing a document, a presentation, or a graphic design. We are creating a novel workstation -- the Animated Work Environment (AWE) -- which is an adjustable workstation accommodating a range of digital and paper displays for use on information-intensive tasks at work or at home. Here is a paper on AWE from the Intelligent Environments 2008 conference.

Usability and training effectiveness of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

Blake Mitchell and I investigated how level of training affects peoples' ability to use an AED to perform an emergency resuscitation. See: Mitchell, K. B., Gugerty, L. & Muth, E. (in press, 2008). Effects of brief training on use of automated external defibrillators by people without medical expertise. Human Factors. (PDF)
